We focus on emerging issues in biosecurity and biodiversity, with established active research programmes and postgraduate training and education and training opportunities for a range of audiences.
New Zealand is a world leader in conservation practice and biodiversity and biosecurity research. This country and the Pacific region of which it is a part has high levels of endemism in its flora and fauna and unique ecosystems of international interest.
Biosecurity is a major and growing concern for New Zealand, as reflected in policy and funding decisions. Biological invasion is recognised as a major threat to native biodiversity, especially in island nations (and other geographically and evolutionarily isolated areas). However, islands are also more likely to respond to successful eradication and border control methods to reduce or remove threats.
With the combination of expertise from Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research and the University of Auckland, the Centre provides new opportunities for generating synergies around existing areas of research and a strong platform to exploit national and international funding opportunities.
These interactions are leading to novel and innovative approaches in biosecurity, biodiversity and biosystematics research that will significantly enhance the capacity, efficiency and quality of biodiversity management, conservation and biosecurity in New Zealand and internationally.
Joint Graduate School in Biodiversity and Biosecurity
The Joint Graduate School is a collaboration between the University of Auckland and Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research. The School focuses on postgraduate supervision and is an extension of the Centre for Biodiversity and Biosecurity.
